Oregon's Kelly 'Flattered' But Won't Jump Ship For Buccaneers
University of Oregon's head football coach has resisted the temptation to take a potentially more lucrative job with a professional team.
Until late Sunday, Chip Kelly was negotiating to coach the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But now Kelly says he's staying put.
In a written statement released Monday morning, Kelly said he was "flattered" but had "unfinished business to complete at the University of Oregon."
The Buccaneers' general manager Mark Dominik told the Tampa Bay Times that Kelly's "heart is with college football and Oregon."
Kelly is entering the third year of a six-year deal. His base salary rises steadily to $4 million a year in 2016. That doesn't include hefty bonuses Kelly earns from successful seasons, like the last one.
But U of O is also facing a potentially damaging NCAA investigation into recruitment practices.
NFL coaches don’t have to worry about collegiate rules, and they often earn more than college coaches.
