Judge Orders Release of Grand Jury Transcripts in Police Shooting of Campbell
A Multnomah County Judge agreed Wednesday to release the grand jury transcripts in the police shooting of Aaron Campbell. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
The documents aren't immediately available. It's taking time to transcribe all the audio. But the agreement to release them marks the first time grand jury testimony has been handed to the public in a Multnomah County police 'use of force' case. Portland Police commissioner, Dan Saltzman, said it's a big step and he's interested to see what extra information it provides. Dan Saltzman: "The grand jury issued a letter that was pretty indicting - not a criminal indictment but an indictment I believe of the on scene command and coordination. So i want to see more of what they saw and heard that made them reach that conclusion." Saltzman also says the FBI has agreed to look at Portland Police Bureau's investigation into the shooting. Chief deputy district attorney, Norm Frink, asked the judge for a transcript of the grand jury hearing. The city's attorney and the attorney representing the Campbell family made no objection.
