Josephine County Sheriff's Deputy Shoots, Kills Armed Man
The Josephine County Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies shot and killed a man after he fired a weapon at the officer Wednesday in Grant's Pass. David Nogueras has more.
The Sheriff's office identified the man as 62-year-old Vaughn Ronald Sanderson.
Police responded to the home after someone called 911 to report that Sanderson had been drinking and was threatening to kill himself.
According to the Sheriff's office, when deputies arrived, Sanderson was armed and ignored commands to put down his weapon.
Police say Sanderson then fired at the deputies, but missed. The officer then returned fire killing Sanderson.
The deputy, who was not identified in the press release, is on paid administrative leave while the Oregon State Police investigates the incident.
According to the Daily Courier Newspaper, police records indicate that Sanderson had threatened law enforcement in the past.
The paper reported that because of past disturbances, a minimum of two officers were required to respond to any complaint at the Sanderson home.
