John Kitzhaber Throws His Hat In The Ring
Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber ended months of speculation Wednesday by declaring his intent to get his old job back. Salem Correspondent Chris Lehman has some reaction to the decision.
Democrat John Kitzhaber issued a statement on his website that he is running for governor because, “we need to fundamentally change how we engage with one another to solve our shared problems.”
He also filed paperwork setting up a campaign committee.
He served two terms as Oregon Governor from 1995 to 2003. Current Governor, Democrat Ted Kulongoski, is nearing the end of his second term.
Kulongoski says he welcomed Kitzhaber's decision but stopped short of issuing an endorsement.
Ted Kulongoski: “I think the state needs a spirited race for governor. I think the more the merrier to me.”
Kitzhaber is the only high-profile Democrat to formally enter the race.
Former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury is considering a run. Bradbury says he'll make an announcement in about two weeks.
The Oregon Constitution limits governors to two consecutive terms but doesn't bar them from seeking the office again later.
