Intel Announces Plans For New Oregon Factory
Intel announced Tuesday that it will invest up to $8 billion to upgrade its manufacturing technology in the U.S. -- including a new factory in Oregon.
Intel plans to make its next-generation 22-nanometer chips at four existing factories -- in Oregon and Arizona.
It also plans to build a new research-and-development factory in Hillsboro by 2013.
The company expects the upgrades to result in up to 1,000 new high-tech jobs and about 7,000 short-term construction jobs.
Governor Ted Kulongoski thanked Intel profusely and called it wonderful news.
Ted Kulongoski: "This is probably the largest private investment during this last two or three years in this country, what Intel is doing today."
Intel will receive substantial tax breaks for building in Oregon. But many politicians are pleased because it means the company and its high-tech expertise will remain in state for the foreseeable future.
