Immigration Raid In Bellingham Worries Salem Group
This week brought the first big immigration raid since President Obama took office. That will likely come up during a weekend meeting in Salem among organizers and leaders in the immigrant rights movement.
The raid resulted in the arrests of 28 people at an engine shop in Bellingham, Washington.Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano has called for an investigation, but the raid is still a sobering sign for many immigrant advocates. Francisco Lopez, head of the immigrant rights group CAUSA says several hundred people will get together this weekend at Chemeketa Community College to talk about the raid and other matters. Lopez: "The focus is also not just those impacted directly those impacted by unjust immigration laws, but we have a lot of US citizens--Latino US citizens--that participated in the elections."Lopez says there's growing interest in harnessing those votes to bring changes in immigration law, and other issues. Several marches and lobbying days are in the works for spring.
