Heavy Snow, Power Outage Prompts Closure Of Mt. Bachelor

Central Oregon's snowstorm has led to the closing of Mount Bachelor.

Thirty-five inches of snow over the past 24 hours is a record for the mountain, according to resort spokesman Drew Jackson. He says one of the main concerns is the danger of avalanches, because of the quality of this week's snowfall.

Drew Jackson told OPB, "It started off light, fluffy and dry two days ago, but progressively got heavier, wetter and more dense. That's a very unstable situation for our snowpack."

Jackson says the ski patrol has been doing some avalanche control work, shooting explosives up to trouble spots on the mountain. That's why the resort has asked people not to do any hiking on its grounds. Crews had to rescue several vehicles stuck on Century Drive last night.

Jackson says the snow does appear to be slowing down, but more is expected through the weekend.
