Hanna Wants Emergency Session On Washington County District
Oregon House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna sent a letter to state Democrats Thursday requesting an emergency legislative session. it appears unlikely he'll get his way.
Hanna says a change in state law is the only way to clarify a legislative maps that disqualified Republican Jeff Duyck from the November election.
Speaker Jeff Merkley's office says he will not call an emergency session to address district boundaries.
Russ Kelley is a spokesman for Merkley.
Russ Kelley: “Certainly we understand the disappointment among many, particularly Jeff Duyck. But this just isn't a situation that merits spending thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars like a real state emergency would.”
In May, Duyck captured the Republican nomination in the 29th House District, in Washington County. But a citizen's complaint found that Duyck's home lies 30 feet outside the district boundary.
State law requires legislators live in the district they represent.
