A couple of years ago, Genentech received permission from the FDA to market three new drugs. Its factory south of San Francisco was too small - and vulnerable to earthquakes - so the company began a nationwide search for a new location.
Genentech executives say they chose Oregon for several reasons: taxes are higher in California; Genentech received Strategic Reserve Funds from the state; and there's a well educated local population.
Senator Ron Wyden welcomed the medical company, saying, "I think today's announcement is exactly what the doctor ordered. We're coming out of this economic downturn, Genentech is going to be part of the remedy. Congratulations to all of you who did so much to make it possible."
Governor Kulongoski hopes that the proximity of other biotech businesses, like OHSU and the national primate research center, will encourage Genentech to do research and development in Oregon. But the company says that's not being considered at this time.
