NASA astronaut and mission specalist Dorothy M. Metcalf-Lindenburger
A couple of teachers from Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver were in Florida Monday. They watched their friend and former colleague launch into space. Former Hudson's Bay teacher, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, is a mission specialist on the Discovery space shuttle. She'll lead space walks from inside the International Space Station and operate the robotic arm. During ascent and re-entry, she also keeps track of the checklist - to make sure everything's done by the numbers.Hudson's Bay principal, Bill Oman, says her students got her thinking about being an astronaut. "So it kind of came out of a classroom discussion. She was a science teacher here at Bay. She did a little research on her own and found out that they were actually recruiting and signed up to take some tests and before long she was chosen," he said.Oman says he's trying to bring her back to his school as a guest speaker. The successful launch is particularly encouraging for Hudson Bay. Their choir instructor, "Candy" Morrison, died last month after falling off her horse.
