Federal Money Will Support Charter Schools In Oregon
Oregon could see a thirty percent increase in the number of charter schools over the next three years, thanks to a federal grant award announced Thursday by the federal government. Rob Manning reports.
Oregon’s more than 80 charter schools could grow to well over 100, if Oregon meets its goals under the new grant.
The federal Department of Education handed over a check for $9.5 million for two years – but Oregon could get a third year of funding, if Congress renews the charter fund.
Assistant deputy secretary, Doug Mesecar, says he’s expecting Oregon to continue its high standards at the new charter schools.
Doug Mesecar: “They’re focused on quality. They’re focused on increasing rigor, both on the graduation side, but for all students, and that they’re sharing what charter schools are learning in their schools more broadly with all public schools.”
Mesecar applauded Oregon’s practice of being selective in approving charter school applications. But he says Oregon lawmakers could improve charters, by funding them better.
