FAA Fines Hillsboro Aviation Over Maintenance, 'Reckless Flight' Allegations
Federal aviation authorities have fined a Hillsboro company more than $500,000 for its handling of aircraft maintenance and record keeping, as well as an allegedly reckless flight.
The FAA's allegations date back to 2008.
The FAA says Hillsboro Aviation allowed two helicopters to operate with sub-standard parts after unauthorized mechanics worked on them. And the agency says a cover-up further compromised the safety of the aircraft.
A third helicopter flew under the I-5 and I-205 bridges in a way the FAA says was "reckless" and endangered lives.
Both FAA and Hillsboro Aviation officials refused to speak on tape. But Hillsboro Aviation told OPB that the company itself discovered the problems, reported them to the FAA, and took immediate steps to correct them.
Hillsboro Aviation calls the fine "outrageous," and plans to negotiate the amount down. The FAA declined to discuss this specific case.
Officials said in general, fines can add up when infractions recur over a long time.
