Authorities say all 460 kindergarten through 8th grade students who attend were evacuated safely and were not hurt.
Matt Shelby, Portland Public Schools spokesman, says the district doesn't know yet what caused the blaze, or how much it will cost to repair the more than 80-year-old school.
He said they might need to build an entirely new school.
Matt Shelby: "Once this is all cleaned up we will make a determination of what damage costs to repair and how much it costs to build a new one and we'll make that decision then."
Students in Portland have the day off Wednesday because of Veterans Day, but school officials say Marysville's students will return later this week to a different school building that is vacant.
