Earth Day Provides Fodder For Politics
Portland, OR April 21, 2008 2:04 p.m.
Two of Oregon’s leading Democrats joined environmental groups Monday in an effort to translate Earth Day talking points into an election year strategy.
Governor Ted Kulongoski previewed bills he plans to introduce for 2009 legislative session. He said it's the most ambitious environmental agenda in state history.
Ted Kulongoski: “We’ll introduce a package of legislation that will include a cap-and-trade program, and new energy efficiency green-building, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation, such as a low-carbon fuel standard, those policies that will keep Oregon at the forefront, on this critical issue.”
Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury joined Kulongoski in urging supporters to test candidates on their green credentials. Both emphasized that the presidential race, in particular, will determine how much help Oregon leaders will get from D.C.
Monday's rally was part of the Sierra Club’s “Power to Change” campaign, meant to make climate change a top election issue this year.
