Ducks To Be Honored At The White House
Members of the University of Oregon’s Women’s Indoor Track Team will be at the White House Monday. The team will join more than 30 other national champions as guests of President Obama at a reception honoring NCAA student athletes.
UO captured its first-ever Women’s Indoor Track championship last spring. Now the President is recognizing these student athletes for their accomplishments both on and off the field.
Michele Williams, now a senior was part of the 4 by 400-meter relay team that placed first at Nationals.
Williams says she first got wind of the honor while she was surfing the “Go Ducks” website. T
here she saw a picture of President Obama and a headline indicating the President had invited UO student athletes to join him at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Michele Williams: “And I got really excited and I started texting my teammates. And they were like 'yeah we know, but we don’t know if we’re going to go'. A week later, we found out we were going so we’re just really excited that we’re actually going to the White House.”
Williams says she hopes she and her teammates get a chance to meet the President and maybe shake his hand.
Barring that she says she anticipates taking about a thousand pictures.
