Ducks Announce Plans, Bellotti In Charge Of Timing
The University of Oregon announced a new head football coach Tuesday. and a new director of athletics. But the names are familiar ones.
Current head football coach, Mike Bellotti, will become the director of athletics, but the timing is up to him.
When Bellotti makes the move, the team’s offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, will become the Ducks’ head coach.
Kelly is credited with the Ducks’ high-scoring offense, which put up 65 points against Oregon State over the weekend.
The announcement comes as Kelly's coaching has been turning heads at other schools. Coach Kelly says he’s willing to wait a little while for the head coaching job in Eugene.
Chip Kelly: “This is where I want to be. It’s a dream come true for me, and I told Mike, it’s his call, just because other schools are calling me, it doesn’t mean he has to put a deadline on what he does. He’s put this program in a national light. He’s one - if not the most respected coach in college football. It’s his shot that he gets to call, and I’m just honored that I get to follow him.”
The university’s current athletic director, Pat Kilkenny, is expected to stick around after Bellotti replaces him, as a consultant.
Bellotti is one of the most successful college coaches in Pac-10 conference history. He says he intends to coach at least the next football season.
