The Oregon Department of Justice is warning people about scam artists who've been calling to talk about the risk of computer viruses.

Attorney General, John Kroger, says they're investigating more than a dozen complaints of bogus callers.

The Oregon DOJ is warning consumers about a scam involving callers claiming to be fighting computer viruses.

"They call people on the phone. They tell people that because of the way they're using their computer, they're at risk of computer viruses and offer to help. And then walk the person through what are supposedly computer security steps, which in fact install spyware on the person's computer that steals their personal financial information and identity," Kroger said.

Last year Oregonians reported losing nearly $2 million to scams.

Experts say hang-up on unsolicited calls and delete similar e-mails.

Never open attachments or click on links from suspicious emails because they may well contain software created to steal your personal information.
