Day Center Infected With E. Coli Will Remain Closed
E.coli infections were found at Fletch Family Day Care March 19th, but the center wasn't closed until two weeks later.
Four children were hospitalized. Of those, a four-year old boy died.
Dr. Alan Melnick of Clark County Public Health said Monday would have been the day for the county to re-evaluate the closing, but the Fletch family acted first. Alan Melnick: "The day care has notified us they wish to remain closed until next Monday. That's OK with me. For them to re-open, they still have to meet the criteria... their workers, they still have to have two negative tests for e. coli separated by 24 hours."
Melnick says a number of kids who attend the day care center have passed that test, and can safely go to other day care centers.
Melnick confirmed there have been no new infections.
He says he's still comfortable with the county's timeline for closing the day care center. Melnick says if it had closed sooner, before additional tests were ordered, health officials might not have caught developing cases.
And those could have spread the disease further.
