Clinton Challenges Obama To Debates On Oregon Issues
Portland, OR April 23, 2008 3:51 p.m.
Senator Hillary Clinton has fired a shot across the bow after Tuesday's primary win in Pennsylvania. She's challenged Senator Barack Obama, to a pair of debates in Oregon. April Baer reports.
Clinton's campaign has trailed behind Obama's in field offices and fundraising, but with this challenge, she made it clear she's looking ahead to Oregon's primary, on May 20th.
Hillary Clinton: "Oregon deserves just as much attention, and just as much information to make your decision as New Hampshire, Iowa, and Pennsylvania."
Clinton is proposing two Democratic debates -- one on rural issues.
Her campaign now has a series of policy points called the Oregon Compact. It stakes out positions on local hot buttons, like LNG terminals and forest management.
An Obama campaign spokesman scoffed at the challenge as political gaming -- but stopped short of rejecting it.
Obama leads Clinton in the delegate tally, but the two are jockeying for subtle advantages. The candidate who can capture public opinion or a few more primary votes may have a better chance at nailing down the nomination.
