Clackamas County Investigating Shooting By State Trooper
An Oregon State Trooper is on paid administrative leave after shooting and wounding a motorist in Clackamas County Sunday.
Oregon State Police say Trooper Justin Lane shot 37 year old Scott Lee Campbell. OPB’s David Nogueras has more.
According to the Oregon State Police, Trooper Justin Lane was driving down Southeast 82nd drive when he spotted Scott Lee Campbell walking on the side of the road.
Lane approached Campbell because he matched the description of someone suspected in a property hit and run in the Milwaukie area.
The details of what happened next are murky and are now the subject of an investigation underway by the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team.
According to Lieutenant Greg Hastings of the Oregon State Police, when Campbell showed a knife, Trooper Lane drew his gun and called for backup.
Greg Hastings: "And as he awaited back-up the man became non-compliant and our trooper fired more than one shot from his handgun striking the man twice and injuring him".
Campbell’s family members told investigators, he was despondent over a recent family death and had been drinking during the day of the shooting. He is in serious condition at at a hospital in Portland.
