Albina Ministerial Alliance Condemns Delay In Interviewing Portland Officer in Fatal Shooting
Portland's black community is condemning the fact that city police officer Jason Walters was not immediately interviewed after the shooting of Jack Collins on Monday. Walters killed Collins after the homeless man came out of a bathroom covered with blood and holding a utility knife. Officer Walters has now been interviewed by detectives, but members of the 'Albina Ministerial Alliance' say it should happen straight away - just as if Walters were an average citizen. Alliance spokeswoman Joyce Harris also said her group would be closely following the case. She said injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. "We are concerned at the disproportionate and the disparities in African Americans who have been killed at the hands of Portland Police Officers, but we're concerned about all of our citizens," she said.
Portland Police have now released details from Officer Walters' interview. He told investigators that Collins kept walking towards him and refused to drop his knife.
Police also say Collins threatened to kill a woman and her son.
