Adams Apologizes, Leonard Calls For Investigation
Portland Mayor Sam Adams Tuesday publicly apologized for lying about his relationship with a teenager. But as April Baer reports, City Commissioner Randy Leonard says he'll call for an independent investigation.
Commissioner Sam Adams has admitted he had a sexual relationship with Beau Breedlove back in 2005.
Adams apologized for lying about the relationship in 2007, when he was running for mayor. Adams says they didn't have sex until a few weeks after Breedlove passed his eighteenth birthday.
That would mean that the relationship was between two consenting adult, and therefore legal.
But Adams also admitted that he'd asked Breedlove to lie about the matter, telling reporters the two hadn't had sex at all.
Randy Leonard says he's bothered that Adams lied.
Randy Leonard: "It bothers me to the level of having to separate my friendship with Sam from the business of the city. I think for the credibility of Mayor Adams, for the credibility of the city, we have to have an independent review."
A spokesman for the Multnomah County District Attorneys office confirmed an investigation would be performed, but further details aren't yet available.
