Portland's David Douglas School District Earns Music Award
Portland's David Douglas school district is celebrating today this week after receiving national recognition for its music programs. Rob Manning has more.
The National Association of Music Merchants honored David Douglas schools with its "Best Community for Music Education" award.
Music shop owner, Russ Beacock, presented the award on behalf of NAMM's foundation leaders.
Russ Beacock: "They have picked a handful of schools and districts in the nation – and David Douglas is one. You should really be proud of that. It's a big deal."
Pendleton and three Washington school districts also won honors.
There's no cash attached to the award, but NAMM representatives say it can attract outside donations.
David Douglas is looking to fill a $4 million budget gap. The school board recently rejected a plan to cut librarians, among other steps.
A top district official says no one is suggesting cuts to the district's award-winning music programs.
