Dozens Protest Against Health Care Reform Outside Baird Office

Dozens of people showed up at Washington Congressman Brian Baird's Vancouver office Tuesday. They were urging Baird to vote "no", when Congressional leaders try to pass a health care bill later this week.

Steve Prastka from Vancouver was holding a homemade sign. "It says Kill the Bill. But we're doing it in a positive and loving way. This is not an angry protest, this is a positive and loving display of our right to share our views," he said.

"I love freedom," said Rich Clark from Yacolt. "I want to preserve it, and I want to stop government from taking over our health care." He said he thinks Baird is principled, although he rarely agrees with Baird's policies.Baird is a Democrat.  He announced late last year he won't run for re-election in November. But he still has a critical role to play as House leaders try to round up the votes they need to pass a health care overhaul.Baird hasn't said how he intends to vote.

I would say there were much more than dozens. The rally started with a prayer and led into pitches from many candidates including Jon Russell. Russell spoke about local solutions to the uninsured by involving charities and churches. The event ended when everyone headed towards the evergreen I-5 bridge where cars honked at the signs of protesters.
