Summer Salmon Season Outlook Bleak
West Coast fishery managers offered a mixed picture of how the summer salmon fishing season might go.
The Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting in Sacramento Thursday offered a bleak outlook for Oregon coho.
None of the options include commercial coho fishing in central or southern Oregon.
The Fishery Council suggested there should be some commercial coho fishing on the North Coast, but less than last year.
Sport fishing quotas for coho also look smaller than last year.
Chinook salmon returns appear better than last year. But the options offer a wide range of how much harvest could be allowed, for both commercial and sport fisheries.
The management council expressed concern that returns over the past few years haven’t met expectations.
Final decisions are expected at a meeting next month in Portland.
