Olympic Flame Dips Briefly Into USA
Blaine, WA February 9, 2010 10:37 a.m.
The Olympic Torch Relay made its only swing into the United States Tuesday.
American Olympic gold medalist Phil Mahre of Yakima carried the torch across the border at Peace Arch Park before handing it back to Canadian torch runners.
Phil Mahre: "It was short and sweet, but I tell you. It's a very special event and it's just great, and I'm honored to be a part of this."
Mahre won gold in the slalom ski race at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.
During a sunrise ceremony, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire and British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell spoke about the fitting symbolism of routing the torch relay under the Peace Arch.
The 106-day torch relay is nearing its end. The Olympic cauldron will be lit during the Winter Games opening ceremony on Friday.
