FBI And S. Oregon Law Enforcement Officials Bust Heroin Network
Bend, OR November 9, 2009 4:54 p.m.
Southern Oregon law enforcement officials announced Monday they’ve cracked down on a major drug network.
Ethan Lindsey reports.
Police say heroin use in southern and rural Oregon has spiked lately – in fact, in Jackson County, heroin-related crimes have doubled this year.
In announcing the federal prosecution, police say they believe they've "cut off the head of the snake" in Medford’s heroin trade.
Mark Huddleston is the Jackson County district attorney.
Mark Huddleston: “Will it stop heroin use in Jackson County forever? No. Will it make a difference in the short and medium term? Absolutely. This particular group was responsible for up to half of the heroin that was being brought in to Jackson County.”
Medford police chief Randy Schoen said a SWAT team raided a drug house at dawn on Sunday to cap a two-year investigation.
Schoen said more than 20 people were arrested – and that $90,000 worth of high-grade heroin was confiscated in the raid.
