Multnomah County D.A. Investigating Certification Complaint
Portland, OR November 5, 2009 12:27 p.m.
Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk has confirmed he's investigating a complaint that a Chief Deputy in the Sheriff's Department did not complete state certification training requirements.
As April Baer reports, it's the second time problems have cropped up for county personnel.
Schrunk says he hopes to bring his investigation to a close Thursday. A staffer at the Sheriff's Department alleges Chief Deputy Tim Moore did not complete field training, before a captain signed off on his training manual.
The claims were first reported in the Willamette Week newspaper.
Sheriff Dan Staton, newly sworn in today, said he's aware of the complaint, but says it was lodged before he took office. He wants to see what D.A. Schrunk concludes.
Dan Staton "If he's turning it back to our office, I'll have to find out if in fact there are any truths to the allegations that were made."
For the time being, though, Moore will remain on the job. Moore declined to comment, until he'd seen the District Attorney's conclusions.
Staton's predecessor as sheriff, Bob Skipper, also ran afoul of the law enforcement certification process. He stepped down after failing to complete requirements of the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
