Lack Of Vaccine Forces Cancellation Of H1N1 Clinics
Portland, OR October 26, 2009 4:08 p.m.
Dozens of vaccination clinics, scheduled for the next few weeks have been cancelled -- because of the lack of H1N1 serum. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
Last week, Multnomah County listed dozens of clinic locations and times. But after being swamped by patients at the first two, the county cancelled the rest, saying vaccinations are only available to pregnant women and children under 5.
County health officer, Doctor Gary Oxman, attended one of the area's last flu clinics on Saturday.
Dr. Gary Oxman: "Because of some changes in who got vaccinated as we went through the course of the day, we did end up running a bit short, but we've arranged to vaccinate all those people in the first half of this week. There were some people who were a little bit frustrated, but for the most part people were really amazingly cooperative and patient."
The flu.oregon.gov webpage lists many counties in a similar situation.
The state says there are about 630 intensive care beds in Oregon -- about 70 percent are in use.
