Oregonian Faces Another Round Of Cutbacks
Bend, OR October 9, 2009 1:57 p.m.
The executive editor of the Oregonian outlined the next set of cutbacks at the newspaper Friday, in an interview on OPB's "Think Out Loud".
Peter Bhatia said that the newspaper industry's collapse will force the state's largest media organization to downsize its newsroom from over 400 employees to "something in the 200s."
Peter Bhatia: "We won't have as many resources as we did in the past, there's no question of that. But we're still committed to providing outstanding journalism and the kind of journalism that only newspaper journalists can provide."
Bhatia also said that an internal memo issued Wednesday mentioned that the newspaper would use more content from interns. He says the newspaper will maintain its emphasis on investigative and enterprise reporting.
The memo also described how the newspaper would dissolve many of its smaller teams of beat reporters in favor of two larger groups of reporters.
The newspaper also expects to lose additional news staff as part of a buyout offer that provides health care coverage and months of pay for long-time employees.
