Oregon Delegation Considers Afghanistan Strategy
Portland, OR October 7, 2009 5:07 p.m.
As the Obama administration tries to map the next stage of the war in Afghanistan, Oregon's Congressional delegation is divided on whether more U.S. troops should be sent. April Baer reports.
Democratic congressman Earl Blumenauer thinks additional troops would not be a good strategic move, but Democrat David Wu says he thinks they're necessary.
But several congressmen are waiting to see what the administration proposes.
Democrat Kurt Schrader has written to the President, expressing reservations about a troop increase, but hasn't said how he'd vote on such a proposal.
Democrat Peter Defazio says he's skeptical of General Stanley McChrystal's proposal for 40,000 new troops, as he was of a prior troop increase earlier this year.
Both mentioned the need for clear objectives and an exit strategy.
Republican Congressman Greg Walden says he's waiting on details of the President's plan.
Senator Jeff Merkley characterized his reservations about sending more troops as major, but says he appreciates the policy review underway.
Senator Ron Wyden could not be reached for comment.
Both the Senators are Democrats.
