Nike Leaves U.S. Chamber Of Commerce Over Climate Change
Portland, OR September 30, 2009 1:41 p.m.
Nike became the latest and biggest company Wednesday to part ways with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- saying the business group isn’t being aggressive enough on climate change. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
The Chamber of Commerce has been fighting an initiative by the Environmental Protection Agency to track emissions of certain gasses – like carbon dioxide.
The Chamber wants Congress to set new climate change policies, rather than letting the EPA apply existing regulations.
Nike issued a statement saying the chamber’s position is inconsistent with the company’s view that climate change is an issue in need of “urgent action.”
Nike resigned its position on the board of directors. But will maintain its membership in The Chamber in an effort to “advocate for climate change legislation inside the committee structure.”
Nike is not the first company to cross swords with The Chamber. Three large utilities resigned earlier this month citing the same issues.
