Portland Police Release Finding In Chasse Case
Portland, OR September 23, 2009 12:55 p.m.
Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer has recommended that one of the officers involved in the death of James Chasse, be suspended. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
Chasse died three years ago -- after police officers pushed him to the ground and struggled to arrest him.
Chief Sizer has now released the findings of the department’s Use of Force Review Board – but not the whole report.
Findings include: that the officers acted in line with policy and were told by paramedics that Chasse showed no signs of medical distress.
But the findings also indicate that Sgt. Kyle Nice failed to send Chasse to the hospital, as required when a Taser is used.
Jason Renaud is with the Mental Health Association of Portland.
Jason Renaud: “This is not an investigation report, this is just a press release trying to ameliorate the hard feelings about what happened to James Chasse.”
Chasse’s family has filed acivil suit against the city and the ambulance company that responded.
