Former University of Oregon President and NCAA president Myles Brand died Wednesday after battling pancreatic cancer. KLCC's Jes Burns reports.
Myles Brand served as University of Oregon President from 1989 to 1994 where he guided the University through the era of Measure 5.
Dave Frohnmayer was Brand's successor as U of O president, but also worked under him at the University during the funding crisis.
Dave Frohnmayer: “It's my view, not withstanding the academic cuts that were made – and they were brutal – that he helped to preserve the academic core of the University… when perhaps a lesser leader might have done a less skillful job in doing that.”
After leaving Oregon and serving a stint as University of Indiana President, Brand took over as head of the NCAA, becoming the first university president to do so.
There he became known for ushering academic reforms into college athletics.
