Jeld-Wen Shutters Texas Window Plant
Bend, OR September 16, 2009 4 p.m.
Wood products manufacturer Jeld-Wen announced this week that it will close one of its window factories in Texas.
Central Oregon correspondent Ethan Lindsey reports that has worried some of the companies' employees in Oregon.
Jeld-Wen is the largest private company in the state, with more than a-(b)billion-dollars in revenue. That’s according to Oregon Business magazine.
3000 Oregonians get their paycheck from the company – of 22,000 employees worldwide.
90 of those workers, at a Jeld-Wen vinyl window factory near Dallas, will lose their jobs next Friday.
The Corsicana Texas factory has been open for 25 years.
Spokeswoman Teri Cline says workers will be given help in the job search.
Teri Cline: “Really, the biggest factor in this closure is the huge decline of new housing starts. It absolutely is a difficult thing to communicate internally, to employees, because the economy in general is a cause for concern and a feeling of insecurity.”
Klamath Falls-based Jeld-Wen has laid off hundreds of workers in the past year, including seasonal layoffs in Oregon.
