Do-Or-Die Week For Opponents Of WA Gay Domestic Partnership Law

It could be do-or-die week for opponents of Washington's latest gay domestic partnership law.

By the end of the month, the Secretary of State's office hopes to finish verifying signatures for Referendum 71. But the attorney for backers of the referendum says if the measure fails to qualify for the ballot legal action is likely.

Olympia Correspondent Austin Jenkins reports.

Attorney Stephen Pidgeon has written what he calls his second letter of protest to Republican Secretary of State Sam Reed.

Election staff are in the process of verifying every signature on every petition turned in by the Referendum 71 campaign.

This will determine whether the measure to repeal the state's latest domestic partnership law makes it on this November's ballot.

Either way that count is running very close. Now attorney Pidgeon accuses the Secretary of State of rushing the verification process.

He also says voters of Russian descent are being disproportionately disqualified. And that election staffers are showing political bias.

The Secretary of State's office rejects the allegations.

An elections official says there have not been any changes in the process except to add additional checks.

Clearly these people think they operate in a world outside of state law. Now they are trying to interfere with the secretary of State. It makes a person wonder what other dirty tricks they are willing to try. If they do succeed in getting this on the ballot, which appears very likely, we will all have to work hard to protect the domestic partnership bill. A vote to approve referendum 71 will retain the Washington State Domestic Partnership Bill and affect real families in real ways. Two examples included: The right to adopt partner’s children without paying for a home study, which can cost upwards of $3,000. Your vote to approve means the registered domestic partners of Washington’s first responders will have access to pension and death benefits. This makes our firefighters and police more effective as they can do their jobs knowing if the unspeakable happens their families will be protected. Especially in these difficult economic times it is unfair to place such a heavy burden on loving families. The extreme right is pouring money into Washington State to try and disrupt families and invalidate lives.
