Citing Threats Ref 71 Opponents Ask For Names To Be Sealed
Olympia, WA August 11, 2009 3:40 p.m.
Opponents of Washington's latest gay domestic partnership law say they're under attack and feeling threatened.
As a result, they want Washington's Public Disclosure Commission – or PDC - to seal the names of their financial backers.
Stephen Pidgeon is an attorney for Protect Marriage Washington. It's one of the groups behind Referendum 71, a ballot measure to repeal the state's newest domestic partnership law.
Stephen Pidgeon: “We want to give the PDC the disclosed names of the donors, but we want those names sealed. And we want those names sealed in order to prevent acts of violence against the funders.”
Pidgeon says he's especially concerned about a Bellingham man who writes the blog: “Queer Equality Revolution.”
It encourages “violence” against government and church property.
The blogger denies he's advocating violence against people.
Washington's Public Disclosure Commission says it will not immediately seal the names of contributors. But it will consider the request at its next official meeting later this month.
