Rep. Wu Plans McMinnville Townhall Meeting Monday Night

Oregonians have the opportunity during the Congressional break to attend town hall meetings with politicians.  Across the country, Americans have put the health care overhaul effort at center stage. April Baer reports.

Last weekend Senator Jeff Merkley got an earful during an appearance in Madras. Republicans and Oregon Tea Party members packed an appearance to tell the freshman Democrat they're not happy with the health care packages moving through Congress.

Monday night may be a replay, as Congressman David Wu hosts a town hall-style meeting in McMinnville.

Tom Cox is planning to be there.  He's a Republican, and has been doing some volunteer work for the tax opposition group, the Oregon Tea Party.

Tom Cox: "Normally, when there's a get-out-the-attendance thing it's like 'Please show up, please bring your friends, let me know if you can make it' and there's been none of that. It's 'OK, who's going? Who can I get a ride from?' I don't find anybody at least on our side worrying about attendance."

Cox says he's seen internet videos of shouting matches that have erupted at similar events in other parts  of the country.

He says doesn't expect anything that raucous, and is counseling people to make their points in a way that does credit to the movement.

All of the statistical and anecdotal evidence from around the world shows that the health care problem America is experiencing is easily solved if 1. we treat health care as a human right, not a privelege and 2. take profit out of the equation. Why don't the teabaggers understand this? What are they so afraid of? If you sees politics as a public discourse to create and employ policies that are of benefit to society, then their objections to this process make no sense. If however you see politics as a "game" where the only important thing is for your side to win, then that would explain everything.

Dear YamhillDan- You are a prime example of the pot calling the kettle black when you label the people who disagree with you "teabaggers". So much for a "Public Discourse" as you put it. Here is a response to your ignorant post (unable to see another person's point of view): First....health care is NOT a human right. Not from the beginnings of man until now. Having said that, It's not a privilege either. It is has ALWAYS been something that is worked for and earned. Does that make it a privilege? Maybe if you are unwilling to work. If you cannot work, there is already a program in place for that. Second....take profit out of the equation?? So then, everyone in the health care industry works for free then, only charging for their expenses. Hmmm....not seeing that happen either, doctors need to eat too you know. I don't see politics as a game. I take it VERY seriously. I see politics from the same stand point as the founding fathers: Jefferson, Washington...etc. A SMALL limited government that is there to enhance free market opportunities. That is how they designed the country to operate. Hmm....they must have been "teabaggers" (using your words) since they didn't believe in social government policies either!!

YamhillDan -- If health care is a "human right" I suppose that a car is also a human right, as is a house, a job, your neighbor's wife ... where do you draw the line? And, if there is no profit, what is the motivating driver for improvement? That said, clearly the opposition's line is elevated beyond your dismissal as a "game", correct? Also, I believe it is customary, if you sincerely wish to have a civil discourse, to refer to your opponent as your opponent refers to him/her self. I believe that the "Teabaggers" refer to themselves as "Patriots" or, "American's" but, if you can't stomach that, "Tea Partier" would probably be less uncivil.
