Governor Signs Billion Dollar Transportation Package
Portland, OR July 29, 2009 1:07 p.m.
Dozens of Oregon officials applauded Wednesday as governor Ted Kulongoski signed a huge spending package for state roads and bridges. Rob Manning reports.
The billion-dollar bill addresses nagging transportation problems across Oregon – including Portland’s rickety Sellwood Bridge and the congested 99W corridor through Yamhill County.
Governor Kulongoski signed the bill under a tent outside Portland’s bus terminal, surrounded by elected officials.
Ted Kulongoski: “This bill – House Bill 2001 – represents the largest, the greenest, and the most comprehensive and strategic investment in our transportation infrastructure in the state’s history.”
The bill will be funded through higher vehicle registration fees and gas taxes. It easily passed both legislative chambers.
Business leaders supported the bill because it promises to create 40,000 jobs and to loosen traffic congestion.
Environmentalists support the spending on rail, pedestrian, and bike projects.
