Hot Weather Here For The Holiday
Portland, OR July 2, 2009 9:50 a.m.
Weather forecasters have pegged the Willamette Valley and parts of the coast range with a heat advisory likely to last through Friday. April Baer reports.
Temperatures from Vancouver to Salem will be in the mid 90s today, although the rest of the weekend the heat may recede back into the low 90s or upper 80s.
The Oregon Trail Chapter of the Red Cross has a warning that includes some common-sense tips.
Lisa Harwin "One of the things you really want to do is make sure you carry some water with you. You want to be drinking water all day long, you want to stay hydrated."
The Red Cross' Lisa Harwin says heat stroke is all too common on sunny, hot weekends like these.
She advises changing food intake, too, by cutting back on high-protein meals that raise metabolic heat.
Lisa Harwin "You kinda want to avoid doing strenuous activity, especially right in the middle of the afternoon when it's the hottest outside."
If it's 95 degrees out, Harwin says even sitting still in full sun can take its toll on your health.
