State Investigating Springfield Mayor
Eugene, OR June 26, 2009 1:15 p.m.
The Oregon Secretary of State's office is investigating Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken on allegations he benefited financially from campaign donations. Leiken plans to run for Congress next year as a Republican. KLCC's Rachael McDonald reports.
Oregon's Democratic Party filed the complaint. Leiken was reimbursed $2000 from a company called P & G Marketing and Research that did not register with the state.
Mayor Leiken released a statement Wednesday saying the company is owned by his mother and did polling on the Springfield gas tax proposal.
Leiken said he didn't know the company had not registered.
Democratic Party Executive Director Trent Lutz says there are still a lot of unanswered questions.
Trent Lutz: “We haven't seen a poll at this point. We haven't seen any receipts of whether or not he's actually did any contracting. We haven't seen any check copies that were actually made towards this company.”
The Secretary of State's office has asked Leiken for all that paperwork. The Mayor has not returned media phone calls.
