WSU Cuts Budget By $54 Million; 360 Jobs Eliminated

Washington State University is cutting 360 jobs and eliminating three academic programs to meet a tough budget situation.

The announcement of final budget decisions ends several weeks of debate as to how WSU would cut about $54 million over the next biennium.

President Elson Floyd acknowledged the magnitude of the problem.

Elson Floyd: “There is no doubt at all that there has been the most difficult year in the life of Washington State University.”

WSU has decided to eliminate three academic programs -- Rural Sociology, Theatre Arts and Dance, and German.

Of the 360 jobs cut, 167 are vacant and will be eliminated.  Another 192 faculty and staff will be laid off.

The university president, deans, and chancellors, will contribute five percent of their base salaries to a WSU Excellence Fund, to help preserve other jobs.
