Effort To Recall Portland Mayor To Start In July

The campaign to recall Portland Mayor Sam Adams will get a later-than-expected start in gathering signatures. April Baer reports.

Oregon law doesn't allow anyone to try to recall a public official until he or she has been in office six months.

In the case of Portland Mayor Sam Adams, recall paperwork could be filed as soon as July 1st, but Recall spokesman Jasun Wurster says the decision's been made to wait until after the 4th of July weekend.

Wurster said he didn't want to file the papers, only to have to waste holiday weekend days that will count toward the campaign's deadline to meet its signature goal.

The Recall campaign was forged in the wake of Adams' admission of a sexual relationship with Beau Breedlove, a young man who turned 18 around the time they met.

Contributions only total about fifteen hundred dollars.

Wurster says the campaign will not rely heavily on paid organizers or leaflets.

He was unable to say how many people have signed on as neighborhood coordinators.

There's still no indication when Oregon's attorney general will complete his investigation Adams' relationship with Breedlove.

Hi All, We will not be using any paid signature gathers. We are all volunteer and need your help. There will be a Meet and Greet this Wednesday June the 17th at Coffee Lovers ( 4144 SE 60th Ave. ) from 3:00PM to 7:00PM where the public is welcome to stop by to ask any questions you have about the Recall of Sam Addams. Together we will make our government better, RecallSamAdams.com Jasun Wurster

OPB: I usually respect your news judgement. But you have run so many articles about every detail of this recall effort ... are you promoting it? Or have you just been manipulated? The only new information here is that the filing of some paperwork will be delayed a few days. Is that really news? Especially after we've been hearing about this on the air every five minutes. Especially when they're so few volunteers and so little money involved? The Caeser Chavez petitioners have a much bigger effort going on, but they don't get nearly the same amount of coverage. They're more important issues right now. Please focus on news that is relevant and important.

PORTLAND, OREGON - without doubt, my favourite US city. Civilised, urbane, gentle, tolerant and 'aware'. A city where any European (like this Brit) can feel at home, valued, considered and welcome. Why, even your 'street people' are generally nice and well-mannered...do you know how lucky you are? the only criticism I have is that occasionally the garishly dressed younger women who ride the MAX can be a little too loud, for my taste. I don't need to know that this one dissed you or that one is a motherf...er. All the foregoing is what I have felt and thought for quite a few years, now, but - what is this? -am I seeing a worm in the apple? It now seems as though there are some in Portland who, under the guise of righteous indignation at the idea of a public official having LIED, are really out to get Sam (unknown to me, let me say, since we have never had any contact) and pull him down, destroying him politically. Forgive an outsider's making so bold as to express a view, but it begins to seem a tad homophobic to me....not at all Portland behaviour, really. This seems to me not so much an attempt to cleanse City Hall of a liar (a very debatable term in this case, at best) but more likely a convenient way of unseating the gay Mayor. Some of you truly are more interested in the Mayor's sexual activities than you are in whether he broke the law or lied about kissing Beau Breedlove. For those that are, both their morality and the decent majority of Portland would be better served by their fessing up and being honest about their true motivations.

Edward~ Funny you mention that. I've actually been in touch with the Chavez Boulevard committee pretty recently, and yes, we are planning some coverage for next week. If you take our stories about the recall in context of all the other city news we report, I don't think you'll find it out of balance. Thanks for writing, April Baer
