MLB Draft May Pull Top Players From Ducks And Beavers
Portland, OR June 9, 2009 1:31 p.m.
Baseball's Major League draft for first-year players starts Tuesday. It often confounds the best-laid plans of Oregon's college baseball programs.
Seeing players scooped up by the majors is nothing new for the Oregon State Beavers.
This year, they may lose Ryan Ortiz, who plays catcher, and sometimes first base. Recruit Andrew Susac of California may also be drafted before he ever puts on a Beavers' uniform.
The Oregon Ducks' recently re-vamped team may also lose one of its top recruits to the majors.
Several news outlets are reporting that Georgian Braxton Lane is likely to be drafted.
Lou Pavlovich is the editor of the newspaper Collegiate Baseball. He says the Ducks have other solid prospects lined up.
Lou Pavlovich: "This class they brought in this year, depending on how many come, it really ought to help get their offense going, because I know they've struggled in that area."
The Ducks finished last season 14 and 42. The Beavers won 37 games, and lost 19.
