Renters in Oregon could get a temporary reprieve from their landlords’ financial problems. The Oregon House approved a measure Monday that gives renters at least 30 days to move after the unit they’ve been living in is sold in a foreclosure proceeding.  Salem correspondent Chris Lehman explains.

Think about this possibility:  You pay the rent on time every month, but all of a sudden you get a notice on your door telling you to move off the premises immediately.  

Supporters of this measure say that’s what often happens when a renter is living in a house that’s been foreclosed on.

Democratic Representative Carolyn Tomei says the result is that people are turned out on the streets through no fault of their own.

Rep. Carolyn Tomei:  “This affects usually very low-income people throughout the state, and many of them only rent month-by-month, so this would give them time to find another place.”

At least 30 days, or as much as two months if they’re in a lease.  The bill passed the House without opposition and heads to the Senate for final approval.
