Atheist Ad Campaign Targets Moscow, Idaho

North Idaho is one of the targets of a new media campaign by atheists.

The American Humanist Association is running bus and billboard ads in selected cities around the country. Inland Northwest Correspondent Doug Nadvornick reports the organization picked Moscow, Idaho for its unique mix of people.

Along Highway 95 near the Idaho-Washington border, there’s a billboard that reads.

Roy Speckhardt: “Don’t believe in God? You’re not alone.”

Roy Speckhardt is the executive director of the American Humanist Association.

The billboard is an offshoot of an advertising war that the atheist organization has been waging with Christian groups, using buses in London and Chicago.

The atheists decided to expand their message to cities like Philadelphia, Dallas and -- Moscow, Idaho. That’s where the University of Idaho is. Washington State University is eight miles away.

Speckhardt says it’s a unique place for the atheist message.

Roy Speckhardt: “You have secular folks. You have people of strong religious values. You have a surrounding area that is very, very conservative in its political beliefs.”

Speckhardt says the response to the billboard has been mixed, but positive enough that his group will soon post messages on billboards in Spokane, Seattle and Portland.

Thankfully Darwin's discovery of evolution completely rules out the possibility that man came from some dirt that a god used to make an image of himself out of, and that woman came from a rib of this dirt-man. Compare the amount of interlocking data from every applicable scientific field including geology, physics, and even molecular biology, all having observational experiments done, that test and prove the hypotheses of evolution occurring, with the DISCREDITED FAIRY TALE - a big invisible monster that nobody has ever seen or heard did it. It is frightening that mass delusions of supernatural beings still exist today. It is the same thing as saying that my invisible fire breathing dragon is more powerful than your multi-headed fire spewing sea monster. So, come around to my way of thinking or I will commit atrocities for it. Everything from the murderous blood stained Sky Daddy who drowned virtually all humanity and other life, sentenced everyone to leave Utopia after Eve (persuaded by a talking snake) ate a magical apple, had Jonah take a ride in the belly of a whale, ruined the life of Job, told Abraham to murder his own kid, killed all the first born of Egypt, had his chosen people commit genocide on the original inhabitants of Palestine, to letting his own son be nailed to some wood so mankind could party with a ghost - is a FAIRY TALE that humanity needs to reject if we are to see many more generations. By the way if you are dumb enough to believe that this fable is real; in the Bible, the murder count is God/millions - Devil/zero. Whom would you rather spend time with, a vengeful monster or a “fallen” angel who thought he had a better way? I am NOT promoting the Devil, just illustrating the craziness in this stupidity. Hopefully if you were previously deluded, after reading this you will see how foolish you have been. Society needs to accelerate its retreat from worshiping outlandishly absurd fictional psychopathic beings. There is no middle ground.

This news story is inaccurate. While Roy Speckhardt has every right as an individual to choose to be an atheist, and he is indeed employed by the American Humanist Association as its executive director, that does not imply that the Association is atheist. Humanism is not about God at all. It is about what is human. The positions taken by the American Humanist Association are decided not by its employees but by its elected Board of Directors because it is a democratically governed organization. The positions of the Association are clearly expressed in the series of three Humanist Manifestos, which are approved by the Board. They do not commit the Association to any position at all with regard to belief or disbelief in the existence of any God. The existence of a God is an issue of metaphysics. The point of Humanism is that it promotes ethics, a human enterprise, free from dependence on any alleged supernatural assumptions or denials for their validity. Metaphysical speculations whether for or against the existence of God are of no interest. Humanist ethics does not rest on them. As the 1973 Humanist Manifesto says, "Humanism is an ethical process through which we all can move, above and beyond the divisive particulars ... of past religions or their mere negation." Humanism offers a promising path forward for humanity, liberated from the distractions of speculative beliefs based in faith concerning supernatural entities. It builds on naturalistic ethics and observable human behavior. Albert Einstein, a Humanist, says "I believe that we have to content ourselves with our imperfect knowledge and understanding and treat values and moral obligations as a purely human problem - the most important of all human problems." That, and not pointless disputes about the existence or nonexistence of God, are what Humanism is about.

To prove the goodness of atheists they should put the atheists IN the bus and see how they get along together and for how long. No drinks. No food. No entertainment. Just themselves. “Organizing atheists is like herding cats” - Richard Dawkins D J Wray http://www.atotalawareness.com
