Washington Governor Chris Gregoire is not on the short-list for U.S. Supreme Court.
Gregoire had been mentioned as a possible candidate after news of Justice David Souter’s retirement broke late last month. But a new list of six finalists, as reported by the Associated Press, does not include Gregoire.
The Governor confirmed Thursday that she’s not under consideration.
Chris Gregoire: “As a lawyer, there’s nothing more humbling than to have your name suggested as a candidate for the United States Supreme Court. So I’m about as humbled as I’ve ever been and honored. But I have got a job to do right now for the people of the State of Washington.”
Gregoire says she was not approached by the Obama Administration about the Supreme Court job.
The six names on the current short list do include a governor and a former governor: Jennifer Granholm of Michigan and Janet Napolitano of Arizona who is now Homeland Security Secretary.
The President is expected to make a decision by the end of the month.
