Kulongoski Signs Bill To Extend Unemployment Benefits

DiscussOregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed a bill Tuesday that makes more people eligible to collect unemployment benefits.
The move comes as Oregon’s unemployment rate soared to 12.1 percent last month. That’s the second highest rate in the country.
About 6000 more people will qualify for unemployment coverage because of the bill, which adjusts the way the state determines whether a laid-off worker is eligibility.
Democratic Representative Brent Barton applauded the governor’s action.
Brent Barton: “This bill is absolutely one of the best bills we will pass this session. It is a bill that will help 6000 Oregon families put food on the table. It is a perfect example of government helping those who work hard and play by the rules.”
The bill passed both the House and the Senate without opposition.
The new benefits won’t have an impact on the next budget. Instead, the move makes the state eligible for about $85 million in one-time federal stimulus money.
