Obama Administration Report Says Bird Populations At Risk
Bend, OR March 19, 2009 1:36 p.m.
The Obama Administration finds that global warming and population growth threaten the birds in this country.
That’s the result of the The State of the Birds report released Thursday by the Interior Department.
Central Oregon correspondent Ethan Lindsey reports.
The state of the birds is bad, and good.
Nearly one-third of the country's bird species are endangered or threatened.
The report shows global warming and population growth have reduced species and numbers, including in the Pacific Northwest and Oregon.
But Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says there’s hope.
He says conservation programs have saved bird populations in wetlands and other habitats.
Secretary Ken Salazar: “There is also a way that we can address these problems in a systemic way. The conservation efforts where we have created partnerships with the states and nonprofits shows us that conservation can really work."
Oregon bird groups involved in the report say it shows how sustainable forest management can help marbled murrelets and spotted owls in the state.
