Portland Mayor Delivers First State Of City Address Friday
Portland, OR February 27, 2009 9:22 a.m.
Portland Mayor Sam Adams delivers his first State of the City address today. As April Baer reports, this annual appearance is getting more attention than usual.
Adams told a group of business leaders earlier this month the speech will be dedicated exclusively to economic development issues. The city has problems with its transportation infrastructure and a slumping real estate market, along with rising unemployment.
Downtown retailers are sweating through a season of dismal sales, but Adams says he will lay out a new strategy for playing up retail hot spots.
Sam Adams "We have the raw materials here in our downtown to compete against any retail competitor of the region. We need to get our act together, and we will."
This is also Adams' first major public address since revealing he lied about his 2005 relationship with an 18-year-old. The mayor's conduct is under investigation.
The City Club has sold out tickets to the State of the City speech.
